Brown boards with gilt print. The original stapling has damaged both the front and back paste down. The front paste down has a "143" written neatly in black ink as well as "Nurse McKenzie", also in black ink. The front end paper has a stamp "Mental Hospital Mont Park" The book is clean, well bound and is in excellent condition. There is no publishing date. The introduction refers to a text book published in 1916, so I am guessing 1920s, though the failure to mention the war is surprising. This is a general text book for ward sisters with a section on mental illness. The tone is compassionate and the focus the physical and mental well being of the patients. Two quotes from the introduction by W.Ernest Jones, Inspector-General of the Insane. "The most serious offence that an attendant, nurse or other official can be guilty of is that of cruelty, or using violence to a patient, no matter what the provocation be; such a misdeed cannot be condoned or excused...."A good nurse is a gift from God second only to a good mother: her duties and functions cannot be entirely repaid by coin of the realm if they are faithfully exercised in seeking the restoration to mental health of those for whom a chance of recovery exists, and in promoting the happiness and comfort of those for whom our science and their care can bring but partial relief." I have included a print out about Jones from the Australian Dictionary of biography. He sounded wonderful.
