India Without Sentiment

Barwell, Marion
The boards have been covered with very creased paper, the front one sporting two clenched fists with a photo of a large crowd of Indians as an insert, though I'm not convinced that "revolution" is the actual theme of the book, which appears to be more about its society, customs and religions. The front end paper has been removed and the hinge on page 11 reinforced with acid free tape. The title page is creased. The book looks tatty, but in its favour, the pages are unmarked, and the binding very good. Barwell's husband, Noel Barwell, a bar-at-law, belonged to the Oxford and Buckinghamshire Regiment and came to Fort William, Calcutta, after the First World War (1914-18), resigned from the army and started practising law in the High Court, Marion Barwell lived and died in Calcutta, and both were described as importnat influences by popular Bengali writer Mani Shankar Mukherjee, better known as Sankar.
