Journal De Clery, Ou Relation De Ce Qui S'est passé Dans La Tour Du Temple Pendant La captivité De Louis XVI, Roi De France

The head of the spine strip is missing a small strip and the tail has been reinforced with clear tape; there is an very neat ownership signature on the front end paper, the hinge between the title page and the frotispiece is cracked, though the binding remains solid. The hinge has also been stained by some long extict strip of tape used as reinforcement; from pp 17 to 24 and again pp 201 to 204 the pages were roughly cut and are damaged along the edge, and there is very minor intermittent foxing throughout the book. There are two title pages: one illustrated and with period calligraphy, the other much more prosaic. Overall a very nice copy, clean ans solid The front board has gilt around the edges and a decorative motif with a centrepiece showing a passive Dauphin about to be whipped. 226 pages. I could not find a publishing date for this edition. c.1840s. 'During the French Revolution. Cléry became the valet of Louis XVI when he was imprisoned in the Temple until January 21, 1793. Although he was arrested on September 25, 1793, he avoided the fate of the guillotine and was freed on July 27, 1794." (Wikipedia)
