This is a first edition of a significant work, which has been divided into four sections: I. Canoni Della Pittura : II. Riflessione Sull' Arte Critico-Pittorica : III. Cavalleri Distintivi Delle Diverse Scuole Al Pittura, : IV. Esame Analitico Dei Piu` Celebri Quadri Delle Chiese, E Delle Piu` Rinovate Pitture A Frasco De' Palagi Di Roma. The book was dedicated to: ' A Sua Eccelenza il Signor D. Stanislao Sanseverino Amatore delle Belle Arti.' Quarter bound with marbled boards, decorative gilt spine, probably a 19th century rebind. The gilt title is lightly rubbed; and the spine cracked between pp 94 - 95, though this does not weaken the binding; on page 141/142 the head's outer edge suffers from minor loss which is well clear of the print . A clean, sharp and solidly bound copy of this important work. ".... Prunetti calls himself an 'accad[emico] quirino' . About Prunetti hardly anything is known. His lifetime is estimated on basis of the appearance dates of his works: he was probably born around 1765 and died shortly after 1822 (his first work being published in 1796, his last work having appeared in 1822). Prunetti's first book Saggio Pittorico ('Essay on paintings') was published in 1786 in Rome. Schudt is mostly impressed with the last part of the book: 'Von wirklichem Wert ist auch heute noch der Schlußteil des Buches Esame analitico dei piu` celebri quadri (...) di Roma. Hier hat er [Prunetti, JT] die in den Kirchen und Pala¨sten verstreuten Werke der Maler zu einem Oeuvreverzeichnis zusammengestellt, so daß man bei einzelnen Ku¨nstlern sehen kann, wo sich ihre Werke in Rom befinden." ( Worldcat, and the enire entry is woth reading) 192 pages. I apologise for stating the obvious, but I'm playing it safe: the book is in Italian.
