544 pages, comprising volumes I and II., illustrated. The book has been rebound and the marbled boards are lightly rubbed. The leather spine with is gilt print is lightly knocked at the head and tail, the latter announcing in gilt print that it belongs to the "Beechworth Athaneum"; and the boards' edges chipped. The only other evidence of library ownership is a small circular "Beechworth Public Library Stamp" on the head of the title page and again on the tail of page 544. The back end paper and back paste down are lightly shelf staines and both the front and back hinge exposed, though the binding remains solid. The book offers no publisher, just the 1843 publishing date. A nice copy. "Charles Knight (15 March 1791 - 9 March 1873) was an English publisher, editor and author. He published and contributed to works such as The Penny Magazine, The Penny Cyclopaedia, and The English Cyclopaedia, and established the Local Government Chronicle." (Wikipedia) Apart from this biography of Shakespeare, he also published from 1838-1841 his Pictorial Shakespeare, which "leaned almost exclusively on the First Folio for its textual authority."
