A group in Wangaratta, in north-east Victoria, is trying to make locals take a second look at some trees they usually walk straight past.The town's urban landcare group is holding a photography exhibition and walking tours of Wangaratta's 'significant' trees. Landcare group member, Adrian Twitt, said the trees are native and non-native, and hold significance for local Aboriginals and European settlers.He said the 'Mitchell Tree', next to a bridge just north of the CBD, weaves itself through both groups' stories. "Supposedly the Mitchell expedition of 1836 ...came through here and camped here," he said. "But I understand it's also very significant from the Aboriginal point-of-view." Other 'significant' trees include a bunya pine planted on the grounds of the town's oldest house, and two redgums by the Ovens River used to make canoes and store food. Mr Twitt said it was important for people to remember that trees - as well as buildings - have heritage..... He said the photography exhibition, which will feature 40 short-listed entries, had thrown up some surprises. "We allowed people to select what they thought were significant," he said.
