So it's a neat guide for those digging into family history, and suitable even for folk who have never learned Latin, because a thorough grasp of Latin grammar is not necessary. Why? Parish clerks, as McLaughlin points out, largely restricted their entries to names, relationships, and dates, perhaps also noting occupations and locations. Accordingly, this booklet provides lists of commonly encountered names (many of which you won't find in Latin dictionaries) and terms, sometimes adding a brief explanatory preface re forms/conventions. Of course, for more elaborate documents (deeds, leases, legal declarations, disputes etc) other guidance will be required, but 'Simple Latin' is recommended for the budding genealogist."
